The Golden Apple of Discord

Eris represents discord, rivalry and the breakdown of harmony. Excluding her from a celebration was therefore an invitation for conflict.

She did not need an army or a weapon. One object — and one carefully chosen challenge — was enough. By placing beauty, pride and status in competition, the apple exposed rivalries already waiting beneath the surface.

That idea became central to Beauty Starts a War: a seemingly small act creates consequences far larger than anyone in the room initially understands.

Zeus refused to decide which goddess deserved the golden apple. Instead, the choice was given to Paris, a prince of Troy living near Mount Ida.

Hera, Athena and Aphrodite each tried to persuade him. Hera offered political power and kingship. Athena offered victory, wisdom and success in war. Aphrodite offered the love of Helen, celebrated as the most beautiful woman in the world.

Paris chose Aphrodite.

That choice did not by itself create the Trojan War, but it became one of the most famous mythological steps leading toward the conflict. Helen was already married to Menelaus of Sparta, and Paris’s relationship with her set the Greek expedition against Troy in motion.

Greek mythology does not survive as one fixed canon. Stories were told and retold over centuries, and different Greek and Roman writers sometimes preserved different details.

The Golden Apple and Judgment of Paris story is a good example. Some parts are only briefly referenced in early surviving Greek literature, while later writers preserve fuller versions of the wedding, the goddesses’ offers and Paris’s decision.

On Greek Myth Rap, we separate the major ancient traditions where they differ rather than treating every later detail as though it appeared in the earliest version of the myth.
